4 Fresh and Fun Back to School Lunch Ideas

4 Fresh and Fun Back to School Lunch Ideas

Summer break is over, and it’s time to go back to school. Your kids are rocking their new clothes and sporting new backpacks loaded up with a fresh batch of school supplies and a new lunchbox.

But what about what goes inside that lunchbox? We’ve got a few quick and easy lunch ideas that are guaranteed to please your little students.

Anything Wrapped in a Tortilla

Sandwiches are great — don’t get us wrong. But there’s something exciting about taking old sandwich standbys and wrapping them in a tortilla instead of slices of plain old bread.

Warm up a tortilla on the skillet and stuff it with ham and cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomatoes, egg salad or whatever you kids usually enjoy for lunch — even peanut butter and jelly.

Branch out with this recipe for ranch chicken wraps, or this tasty chickpea wrap and this grilled vegetable wrap. See? Everything tastes great in a tortilla!

DIY Lunch Packs

There may be nothing more convenient than pre-wrapped boxed lunches, but that convenience doesn’t come cheap. And what’s more, you’ll find all kinds of less-than-wholesome ingredients in those pre-boxed lunches.

The good news is you can make your own exciting lunch packs for a fraction of the cost — and you’ll know exactly what’s in them.

Try to include a protein, a starch, a fruit or vegetable and a drink in each pack. This tutorial for planning out your own DIY lunch pack alternatives keeps your costs under $1 for each pack. Our favorites are the chicken strips with smoothie and the pizza with pepperoni. Once you’ve got the basics down, you’ll be able to create your own ideas!

Dip It

Everyone loves variety, so throwing a little variation into your child’s lunch lineup each week will help keep them eager to see what you made for them. Anything that includes a dip just makes lunch all the more enjoyable. Try these polka dot pizza dippers, this peanut butter fruit dip and this avocado hummus, which is so good, we’ll be adding it to a few of our dinner plans as well.

Sandwiches with a Twist

Sandwiches are easy and cheap, but they’re also usually boring. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Break out of the PB and J with something a little more interesting, like this grilled eggplant and roasted pepper sandwich with halloumi. And there’s nothing plain and ordinary about these chorizo grinders with spicy salsa and this tasty and light hummus vegetable sandwich.

Happy packing!
